The Novotel provides a great location coupled with the reliability of a chain establishment, right in the heart of Hong Kong at Nathan Road, with a short walk to the Jordan MTR station and a range of busses. The Novotel is actually located on Saigon Street, around 100 metres off Nathan Road. To anyone walking we’d suggest quickly tracing the steps on Google Streetview to make it easy to find.
The ground floor is actually the concerige, and you are required to go to level one for check-in. It was however, easy to leave the bags and have them taken care of with the bags being brought up later. Check in on the Premier Floor was easy and handled by a very competent and helpful team member. The payment of the security deposit was able to be done with foreign cash using an excellent envelope system, which is far preferable to pre authorisation and having funds tied up for a week. Keeping foreign cash as a deposit that wouldn’t otherwise be used was excellent and the Novotel gets top marks for this system. I was staying one level below 15, on 14. I was advised that the two top levels are for club floor rooms, but really, it’s of no great concern as long as access is easy to the club lounge on 15.
The room was definitely on the small side, a couple I met in the lounge found it unacceptable for two people and moved to a suite. For one it was OK, but two people would easily fall over each other and get in the way with limited clearance around the bed. The bathroom was also small and quite narrow. However, I believe that the small room is reflective on Hong Kong real estate being limited. If there are two people I would suggest looking at a larger room, especially for longer stays.
In terms of décor, the room was up to speed, well maintained and modern. It screamed chain hotel- but not in a bad way as I tend to find chain hotel rooms are well planned and thought out. Every need and amenity was there and I think they made good use of the small space. The view from the window wasn’t very good but this is hardly the fault of the Novotel.
One request would be universal power points rather than using an adaptor to make life easy when plugging in the increasing number of devices carried by the modern traveller. The WiFI was complimentary, but for those not staying on the club level, it’s quite a hefty payout. The club floor was decent and has its own review here.
The sleep quality was good and couldn’t be faulted, but the lights could be a little confusing- I feel one master switch that turns on or off all lights would be really helpful.
In the morning, the premier floor offered a light breakfast, but one could also enjoy the full offering in the restaurant. This was a great move by the Novotel- the restaurant had a huge range of dishes available and the full American-style breakfast was a great offering. It’s a good selection between the quiet and simple club breakfast and the full restaurant experience.
I was able to have late checkout offered complimentary, and then invited to remain in the club lounge until my departure for my late flight. This was a very nice gesture and adds a great deal of value to the club experience.
Would I stay again? Yes, I think it’s a reliable and safe option for a solo traveller with great value, but I would think before booking one room for two people.
